Rooftop solar can reduce the electricity you buy from the grid, but the result depends on how your property uses power. A useful estimate starts with consumption, not with a promise about a percentage saving.
Where the saving comes from
When the solar system is generating, its electricity can first support loads that are running at the property. This is often called self-consumption. If the system produces more than the site is using, the treatment of that surplus depends on the meter arrangement and the rules of the local electricity distribution company.
Solar normally affects energy charges more directly than fixed charges, taxes or other billing components. That is why two properties with the same total bill may not receive the same benefit from an equally sized system.
Start with the right information
Collect recent electricity bills and note:
- monthly electricity units, not only the amount paid
- tariff and fixed-charge components
- major daytime loads such as air conditioning, pumps, machinery or office equipment
- seasonal peaks and unusually low months
- planned additions such as an electric vehicle, new machinery or extra cooling
Twelve months of data is better than a single bill because it reveals seasonal variation. A site survey then checks whether the roof can support the capacity suggested by the consumption profile.
Why daytime use matters
A home that is mostly empty during working hours may export more solar electricity than a shop or office with steady daytime demand. A battery can change the usage pattern, but it also changes system cost, design and maintenance. Battery storage should therefore be evaluated as a separate requirement rather than assumed in every rooftop proposal.
Read savings estimates carefully
A responsible estimate should state the assumed solar resource, system losses, electricity tariff, usable roof area and share of solar energy expected to be consumed on site. It should also explain whether future tariff changes, financing costs, maintenance or equipment replacement are included.
Use online calculators for initial planning, then ask for a site-specific design and written quotation. Actual generation and savings vary with shading, orientation, weather, equipment, maintenance, grid availability and consumption behaviour.
